Let’s Cut the Confusion About SPFs! With so many numbers, types, and formulas out there, choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming. In this blog, I’ll simplify it all — helping you understand which SPF to choose, how often to apply it, and why it’s a non-negotiable if you care about ageing, pigmentation, or protecting your skin long-term.

We all hear about them, and we all know we should wear them…

But with so many numbers, brands, and types, SPFs can feel like a minefield — so most people just grab the first one off the shelf and hope for the best.

In this blog I will break it all down so you can feel confident knowing which SPF to go for, how often to apply it, and why it really matters — especially if you’re concerned about ageing, pigmentation, or skin damage.

🌞 First Things First: What Are UV Rays?

When we talk about sun damage, we’re usually talking about UVA and UVB rays:

  • UVA = Ageing – These rays go deep into the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin, leading to lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
  • UVB = Burning – These rays are responsible for sunburn.

Both UVA and UVB rays can cause cancer, but they do it in slightly different ways:

  • UVA rays – These penetrate deeper into the skin and generate free radicals, which can also damage DNA indirectly and contribute to skin cancer over time. They’re more sneaky because you don’t feel them as much (no burn), but they’re still harmful.
  • UVB rays These are more directly damaging to the DNA in skin cells. That damage can lead to mutations, which increase your risk of skin cancer, especially basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

But it doesn’t stop there — we’re also exposed to HEV light (from screens and artificial lighting), which can contribute to pigmentation, dullness, and premature ageing. If you’re on a screen all day at work, protection from HEV light skin damage is just as important.

At M Aesthetics Warwickshire, I’m passionate about helping you with personalised sun protection skincare recommendations, so you can shield your skin effectively every day.

🧴 SPF Terms Debunked: What’s What?

Here’s a quick cheat sheet to make sense of all the SPF terms out there:

  • SPF = “Sun Protection Factor” – measures protection against UVB rays
  • Broad Spectrum SPF = protects against both UVA and UVB rays (always look for this!)
  • Physical (Mineral) SPF = sits on the skin and reflects rays (great for sensitive or breakout-prone skin)
  • Chemical SPF = absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat

At M Aesthetics in Stratford-upon-Avon, I offer a carefully curated selection of broad-spectrum sunscreen from trusted brands like Environ, Heliocare, and SkinCeuticals, tailored to your skin’s needs.

🧠 What Does the SPF Number Actually Mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, but here’s what the numbers actually mean:

  • SPF 15 = blocks approx. 93% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 = blocks about 97%
  • SPF 50 = blocks around 98%

The difference between SPF 30 and 50 is small — what really matters is how much and how often you apply it. Many people think that you don’t need to reapply SPF 50 – but you do.

⏱️ How Often Should You Reapply?

This is where so many people go wrong. That SPF 50 you applied this morning? It’s not still working mid-afternoon.
Here’s a simple guide based on your day:

  • ☁️ Rainy UK day, mostly indoors: Apply once in the morning
  • 🚶‍♀️ Normal day (approx. 3 hrs outdoors): Reapply mid-day
  • 🌳 Weekend outdoors (5+ hrs): Reapply every 2 hours
  • 🏖️ Holiday / sunny climate: Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating

A question I get often is – Can I use a BB/CC cream or foundation with SPF in it? Will that be enough coverage?

My answer is – SPF in BB/CC creams or foundation is better than nothing, but it’s usually not enough on its own.

Most people don’t apply a thick enough layer to get the full protection listed on the label, and reapplying throughout the day (which is essential for proper SPF coverage) rarely happens with makeup.

Plus, not all makeup products offer broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. For reliable sun protection, it’s best to use a dedicated sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) underneath your makeup, and consider the SPF in cosmetics as a helpful extra layer, not your main defense.

👩‍🦰 Who Should Use SPF?

Everyone. Every day. Yes, even here in the UK!

Whether it’s raining in Stratford-upon-Avon or sunny in Spain, UVA and UVB protection is essential, as rays can still damage your skin — even through glass.

Wearing SPF daily is one of the most powerful steps you can take in preventing premature ageing, sun spots, and pigmentation — especially when paired with anti-ageing treatments.

🍊 Support From Skincare: Vitamins A & C

Sun protection goes beyond SPF. At M Aesthetics, I also recommend boosting your routine with:

  • Vitamin C: Antioxidant that protects against free radical damage from UV and pollution. A Vitamin C serum would be brilliant under SPF in the morning.
  • Vitamin A: Encourages skin renewal and repair. It can help repair DNA damage caused by UV rays, which is key for lowering long-term risks like skin cancer. It also reduces hyperpigmentation by slowing melanin production and evening out skin tone.

I stock Environ SPF, Heliocare sun protection, and SkinCeuticals sunscreen UK products that combine SPF with these powerful ingredients for next-level protection.

🧬 The Skin Barrier: Your First Line of Defence

Before SPF even touches your skin, there’s something just as important working behind the scenes: your skin barrier.
Your barrier is the outermost layer of your skin that protects against external aggressors — like UV rays, pollution, and bacteria — while locking in moisture and keeping irritants out. When this barrier is strong and healthy, your skin can:

✅ Tolerate SPF and active skincare better
✅ Recover more quickly from sun exposure
✅ Naturally defend itself from environmental damage

But when it’s compromised (think: dryness, flaking, irritation), SPF might not work as effectively, and your skin can become more prone to sun damage, inflammation, and pigmentation.

🧴 How to Strengthen Your Skin Barrier

A few of my top tips to support your barrier:

  • Use gentle, non-stripping cleansers
  • Avoid over-exfoliating (especially with acids)
  • Layer on hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides
  • Add barrier-loving products with niacinamide, squalane, or peptides
  • Don’t skip moisturiser — even if your skin is oily!
  • Take skin supplements like Omega oils and collagen to build strong skin from within.

And of course, always apply a broad-spectrum SPF as the final step in your morning routine.
Your SPF can only do its job properly if the skin underneath is healthy — so keeping your barrier in check is essential for real, long-term protection.

👋 In Conclusion

Choosing the right SPF doesn’t need to be confusing. Go for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50, apply it daily, and reapply based on your activity and time outdoors.
